LIPEDEMA
A chronic disorder of abnormal adipose tissue

Disproportionately enlarged legs, hips or arms

Usually affects both sides in a symmetrical pattern

Pain, tenderness, pressure or heaviness

Easy bruising

Nodular, dimpled or fibrotic tissue

Feet and hands are often relatively spared

Similar body shape among female relatives
The disproportion may remain noticeable even when overall body weight decreases.
LYMPHEDEMA
Swelling caused by impaired lymphatic drainage

Persistent swelling affecting one or more limbs

May involve the foot, toes, hand or fingers

Heaviness, tightness or reduced mobility

Pitting swelling may occur in earlier stages

Skin and underlying tissues may thicken over time

May follow surgery, radiotherapy, infection or trauma—or arise without an obvious cause
Some patients experience recurrent skin infection, cellulitis or elephantiasis

Dr Muya completed a focused clinical fellowship within the Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery unit at Krankenhaus Göttlicher Heiland in Vienna. Her experience encompassed the assessment and surgical management of lipedema and lymphedema, including lymph-preserving surgery, reduction procedures and lymphatic supermicrosurgery. Working within a multidisciplinary European clinical environment further refined her approach to patient selection, operative planning and coordinated long-term care.
